James Stofan

Senior Vice President Operations at Defenders of Wildlife

James Stofan has a diverse work experience spanning several organizations. James started their career as an Education Manager at SeaWorld Orlando in 1989. James then served as the Director of the Distance Education Division at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health from 1996 to 1999. After that, they worked as the Senior Vice President for Education at the National Wildlife Federation from 1999 to 2003. James then joined NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, where they held various roles including Deputy Associate Administrator for Education, Associate Administrator for Education (Acting), Deputy Assistant Administrator for Planning, Policy and Evaluation, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Education Integration, and Director of the Informal Education Division from 2003 to 2014. Since 2014, they have been working at Defenders of Wildlife as the Senior Vice President of Operations, where they oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization and is responsible for enhancing organizational effectiveness and integrity. James has also chaired the NASA Advisory Council Ad Hoc Task Force on STEM Education from 2015 to 2017.

James Stofan attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory from 1981 to 1985, where they completed their high school education. After that, they pursued a double major in Behavioral Biology and Sociology at The Johns Hopkins University from 1985 to 1989, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, they attended the University of Central Florida from 1992 to 1994 and earned a Master of Arts degree in Instructional Technology/Instructional Systems.
