Software Engineer at Defense Unicorns

Kimberley Schaefer has diverse work experience spanning several industries. Kimberley began their career in the United States Marine Corps, where they held the position of First Lieutenant - Communications Officer. In this role, they managed a large team and developed training plans to ensure performance and safety standards were met.

After leaving the military, Schaefer worked as a Principal Engineer at Lockheed Martin Sygenex/ORICON Sygenex. Kimberley played a crucial role in developing algorithms for radar tracking and integrating biometric technology with government data for homeland security applications. Additionally, they were responsible for business development and technical sales support.

Schaefer then worked as a Product Engineer at Boeing, where they developed and implemented Homeland Security technology solutions. Kimberley represented the company at trade shows and prepared business development papers and presentations.

Following their time at Boeing, Schaefer joined Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP as an Associate Attorney. In this role, they drafted and reviewed documents for corporate and financial transactions, conducted due diligence, and represented clients in pro bono litigation matters.

In 2010, Schaefer founded the Schaefer Law Firm, an immigration law firm. As the owner and software engineer, they grew the firm to become a leading organization in the community, assisting over 1000 customers with their immigration applications. Kimberley managed a team of lawyers and staff, developed training programs, and created efficient processes to ensure accuracy and productivity.

Schaefer also worked as an Adjunct Professor at Concordia University School of Law, teaching Immigration Law Clinic from 2018 to 2020.

Most recently, they joined Defense Unicorns as a Unicorn Engineer in 2023. No end date has been provided for this role.

Kimberley Schaefer has a diverse education history. Kimberley obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer and Information Science from the University of Maryland Global Campus. Kimberley also holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Mathematics from Texas Tech University. Kimberley further pursued their education and earned a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Georgetown University Law Center, specializing in law. Additionally, they completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a concentration in Global Management from the University of Phoenix.

Continuing to develop their skills and knowledge, Kimberley obtained several certifications. Kimberley received the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification from The Council for Six Sigma Certification (CSSC). Kimberley also completed various courses from different institutions, such as Coursera and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Their certifications and courses covered a range of topics including cloud computing, software engineering, back-end and front-end development, and AWS fundamentals and practices.

Finally, it should be noted that Kimberley is qualified as an attorney, having obtained the necessary certifications from both the Virginia State Bar and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
