Joseph Gaeta has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Joseph is currently serving as the Director of Oversight and Engagement at Democracy Forward since September 2022. Prior to that, they worked at the Office of Legislative Affairs in the U.S. Department of Justice as the Deputy Assistant Attorney General from January 2021 to September 2022. From 2011 to 2021, Joseph held various positions at U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse's office, including Senior Advisor and Director of Oversight, and Legislative Director. Before that, they worked as the Chief Counsel at the U.S. Senate Budget Committee from 2009 to 2011, where they played a crucial role in negotiating legislative acts. Additionally, they served as a Trial Attorney at the Civil Rights Division in the U.S. Department of Justice from 2004 to 2008, handling Fair Housing Act cases and receiving commendations for their work. Joseph also worked as a Special Assistant Attorney General at the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General from 2001 to 2004 and served as a Special Master at the U.S. Federal District Court in the Middle District of Alabama in 2002. Joseph began their legal career as a Law Clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Myron Thompson from 2000 to 2001.

Joseph Gaeta received their Bachelor's degree in History and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania from 1988 to 1992. Joseph then pursued a Master of Science degree in Political Theory from the London School of Economics from 1992 to 1993. Later, they attended Stanford Law School, where they earned their Doctor of Law (JD) degree from 1997 to 2000.
