Katrina Smart

Katrina Smart, PhD has a diverse work experience spanning over a decade. Katrina started their career as a Research Assistant at the University of San Diego, where they worked with Dr. David Devine on measuring changes in the Herbig Haro objects of area L1228. Katrina then joined Sequenom as an Engineer before moving on to work as a Research Assistant at the Center for Corrosion and Biofouling Control at the Florida Institute of Technology, where they focused on automating a process to detect biofouling on ship hull coating. Katrina presented their work at a poster session for the Meeting of the Florida Academy of Sciences. Katrina also gained experience as a Graduate Mentor at AMALTHEA Advances of Machines Learning and Theory, where they led a research experience session for undergraduate students, comparing machine learning classifiers to recognize anuran species' mating calls. Katrina presented their findings at the AMALTHEA Symposium. Katrina later joined the Computer Vision Lab at the Florida Institute of Technology as a Research Assistant. Currently, Katrina is employed at ENSCO, Inc. as a Scientist, particularly focusing on data science and analytics related to big data, with current subjects including zoonotic disease spillover vulnerability, health capacitance, and governance of countries, and their impact on disease outbreaks.

Katrina Smart, PhD, completed their education with a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of San Diego, where they studied from 2004 to 2008. Katrina continued their studies at San Diego State University, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Physics between 2009 and 2010. Katrina then pursued their academic journey further and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science from the Florida Institute of Technology, where they studied from 2011 to 2016.
