Emily Grossman

Malacologist & Aquatic Biologist at EnviroScience

Emily Grossman is a Malacologist and Project Manager specializing in freshwater mussel projects in the Upper Mississippi River basin. She is experienced in implementing mussel sampling protocols used in states throughout the Midwest, maintains working relationships with regulatory agencies, and is familiar with mussel ecology, enabling her to prepare survey plans and technical reports that are readily accepted by the agencies and assist clients with agency coordination.

Emily holds a B.A. in Biology from Augustana College and an M.S. in Biology from Western Illinois University. She first experienced the world of mussel sampling by participating in the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ annual mussel blitz in 2011. She has worked with freshwater mussel issues in the professional consulting industry since 2012 and joined EnviroScience in 2021.

As a malacologist and project manager, Emily has developed and implemented mussel study plans for water resource projects such as bridge construction/replacement, barge fleeting, dredging, hydropower, and water intakes/outfalls, including serving as project manager and field team leader for one of the largest known mussel relocations in the US. Emily holds a USFWS Federal Fish & Wildlife recovery permit as well as state permits throughout the Midwest. She is listed as a qualified mussel surveyor in Minnesota, West Virginia, and Ohio and has conducted mussel surveys in the Mississippi and Ohio River basins from Minnesota south to Arkansas and east to West Virginia. Emily holds a PADI Rescue Diver certification, is a member of the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society, and regularly participates in Upper Mississippi River Conservation Committee annual meetings.
