Equality Fund Board Of Directors

Piedmont, Italy

Job description

ABOUT THE EQUALITY FUND

The Equality Fund is transforming the way that resources—and power—flow into the hands of women, girls and gender expansive people worldwide. Designed by feminists for feminists, it is a model for sustainably resourcing feminist movements everywhere, through global grantmaking, gender-lens investing, policy advocacy, and feminist philanthropy. Launched in 2019, the Equality Fund has committed $86 million to date which flows to more than 800 organizations working across 100 countries.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Nominations Committee of the Equality Fund Board is currently extending a call for nominations to fill two positions on the Board of Directors. We are looking for individuals with:

  • Institutional Investor Experience

  • Institutional Risk Management Experience

  • Strong interest in gender-lens and/or other socially responsible investment frameworks

  • A commitment to advancing a feminist governance model that matches the radical ambition, rigour, and power of our global vision.

We are looking for enthusiastic new Board members who are interested in building Equality Fund’s strategy that liberates our movements from unsustainable models of the past and accelerates the revolutionary, unfulfilled power of women, girls, and trans people everywhere. We are seeking a strong feminist partner to join our diverse and dynamic Board.

Our Board members come from diverse backgrounds, and possess a passion for global feminist social change. Successful candidates will support and advance the values and culture the Equality Fund embodies, including a nimble, fast-paced environment poised for taking smart and courageous risks.  Our Values are a grounding force for our work both as a Board and an organization. They include a focus on anti-racism, anti-oppression & intersectionality, feminist leadership, accountability, and radical love.

The Equality Fund Board of Directors is made up of 18 members. The nominations committee is seeking to appoint two new members who bring a combination of the skills to the Board that have been identified as priorities for this cycle of board nominations.

QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES:

ESSENTIAL:

  • Alignment with EF’s Feminist Values, experience with feminist action or activism, and/or experience supporting or working within intersectional feminist frameworks

  • Institutional investment experience, preferably in the Canadian and North American markets

  • Institutional risk management experience

  • Experience within the Canadian not-for-profit and charities regulatory environment

DESIRABLE:

  • CFA, MBA, CAFM, CRM or equivalent international designations in good standing
  • Prior board experience
  • Experience operating at a senior executive level
  • Leadership expertise
  • Investment Committee experience
  • Knowledge of impact and social investment frameworks and products

SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare for and participate in board and committee meetings

  • Fulfill governance and stewardship role to ensure the long term success of the organization

  • Help the Board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities including approval and oversight of the annual budget

  • Assist in the development, review and update of board policies and governance structures

  • Participate in strategic planning sessions

  • Monitor the performance of Equality Fund’s investments and participate in the approval of the annual budget and Financial Planning

  • Monitor internal controls, accountability, transparency, and risk management areas

This is a volunteer position, requiring Board members to participate in one 1-2 day in-person meeting and three half-day video conferences per year. In an effort to consider timezone justice, the timing of meetings will be set to consider the timezones of all Board members. This nominated Board member would be asked to participate in the Investment Committee, which meets virtually an average of 4 times per year for two hours. Board terms are three years, renewable once.

Membership on Equality Fund’s Board of Directors affords Board members the ability to be part of a diverse network of highly skilled leaders that are working together to move flexible, abundant, and unrestricted funding to feminist movements. While building your own leadership skills and network, you can play a critical governing role in how the Equality Fund grows and develops, driving our bold feminist ambition while working hand in hand with a Board of Directors and staff that are united towards a common radical goal.

OUR ENVIRONMENT OF CARE

Equality Fund is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and respectful culture. We do not tolerate harassment, coercion, sexual exploitation, or abuse of any form. We recognize that those behaviors are often rooted in abuse of power, which is contrary to EF's mission to make a more equitable world for women, trans, and non-binary people.

The Equality Fund is an equal opportunity employer.  We believe deeply in equality and diversity of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, and all other protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and abilities, and are committed to providing an accessible candidate experience.  To request an accommodation or adjustment in the selection process and beyond, please contact Nick Kootnikoff at people@equalityfund.ca

To be considered, please submit your application by 9am EST on August 30, 2024. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Equality Fund’s Governance Team will work with the Board Nominations Committee composed of Directors to do an initial screening of applicants. This process takes about 2 weeks from the application deadline.

  • The Nominations Committee will conduct first round interviews with selected candidates within 3-4 weeks from application deadline. The Nominations Committee may conduct a second round of interviews, if needed.

  • The chosen candidate will be subject to a Board vote and will then be notified by the Governance Team.

  • Upon Nomination by the Board, Equality Fund will send the selected candidate an Appointment Letter, which the candidate will have to sign and return.
