Professor Paul Bates CBE FRS

Professor Paul Bates CBE FRS has extensive work experience in the field of hydrology and geosciences. Professor Paul is currently the Chairman and Founder of Fathom Global, a position they have held since November 2013. Prior to this, they held various roles at the University of Bristol, starting in August 1995 as a Professor of Hydrology. Professor Paul later served as the Head of the School of Geographical Sciences from August 2013 to July 2017 and as the Director of the Cabot Institute from February 2011 to July 2013.

Professor Bates has also worked as a Visiting Research Scientist at prestigious organizations such as NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where they spent two months in June 2007, and the EU Joint Research Centre, where they conducted research for three months in 1999. Professor Paul was also a Visiting Research Scientist at the Laboratoire National d'Hydralique et Environnment from February 1993 to August 1999 and at Princeton University for three months in early 1999.

Professor Paul Bates CBE FRS pursued their education in the field of Geography. Professor Paul began their academic journey at the University of Southampton, where they earned their Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) from 1986 to 1989. Continuing their studies, they went on to complete a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geography at the University of Bristol between 1989 and 1993.
