Robert Smith

Chief of Quantum Software at HRL Laboratories

Robert Smith's work experience begins in 2012 when they joined the Association of Lisp Users, Inc. as the President and Board Member. In this role, they coordinated board meetings, managed funds allocation, organized conferences, and worked towards unifying Lisp dialect communities.

In 2013, Smith worked as a Senior Engineer at Clozure Associates and as a Software Engineering Contractor at Auction Mobility and Wikimedia Foundation. At Clozure Associates, they primarily focused on software development, while at Auction Mobility, they designed and deployed a real-time auction engine. At Wikimedia Foundation, Smith contributed to the development of the backend for the VisualEditor project on Wikipedia.

In 2015, Smith held multiple roles at DimensionalMechanics, including Vice President of Technology, Technical Advisor, and Principal Software Architect. The following year, they joined Kymeta Corporation as a Senior Mathematics and Software Engineer, where they wrote advanced software for mobile satellite communications.

From 2015 to 2016, Smith also worked as a Software Engineering Contractor at Affinity.IS. In 2016, they became the Director of Software Engineering at Rigetti Computing, where they invented Quil, led a team in building a quantum optimizing compiler and simulator, and contributed to the design of Quantum Cloud Services.

Smith's most recent position is with HRL Laboratories, LLC, where they serve as the Chief of Quantum Software, starting in 2020.

Robert Smith started their education at Mounds View Senior High School, where they attended from 2004 to 2008. After completing high school, they pursued further education at the University of Minnesota-College of Continuing Education from 2008 to 2009. During this time, they focused on mathematics, but did not complete a degree. Robert continued their education at the University of Minnesota from 2010 to 2011, specializing in mathematics with a concentration in auditing.
