Mathijs worked as a Product Development Engineer at Loparex, leading the product development of coated paper and film products for aerospace, healthcare, and medical markets. Mathijs managed customer accounts valued at around 10 million euro and established collaborations with customers, institutes, consortiums, and universities.
In addition, Mathijs has experience as a Post-doctoral fellow at Utrecht University, where they designed and analyzed catalyst bodies using a state-of-the-art spectroscopic technique. Mathijs published five papers on catalysis and spectroscopy.
Mathijs also worked as an Academic Visitor at IBM Watson Center, conducting research on nanopores formation in SiO2/SiN/SiO2 membranes in a high-resolution electron microscope. Mathijs was responsible for the experiments and analysis and published two papers based on this research.

Mathijs Zandbergen completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Delft University of Technology from 1997 to 2000. Mathijs then pursued their Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the same university from 2001 to 2004. Mathijs furthered their education by earning a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Oxford, where they studied from 2005 to 2009.
