Derek Empie has a diverse work experience spanning over several industries. Derek began their career as an Olympic Researcher at NBC Sports in 1996 before moving on to Kent State University, where they worked as a Graduate Assistant in Sports Information from 1995 to 1997. In 1997, Derek had the opportunity to work at both ESPN and Turner Broadcasting System, gaining experience in marketing and production. Continuing their career in the legal field, they worked as an Attorney at Troutman Sanders LLP from 2002 to 2005 and then at Baker & Daniels LLP from 2005 to 2009. Currently, Derek holds the position of Vice President - Deputy General Counsel at Indiana University Health, where they have demonstrated strong leadership skills by managing a team of legal professionals and overseeing a multi-million dollar budget. Derek has also successfully navigated the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic by transitioning the legal department to remote work.
Derek Empie obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English from DePauw University in 1995. Derek then pursued a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Media Management from Kent State University - Graduate School of Management from 1995 to 1997. Derek furthered their education by earning a J.D. degree from Georgia State University College of Law between 1999 and 2002. Derek also holds certifications in Georgia Law and Indiana Law, obtained through the State Bar of Georgia and the Indiana State Bar Association.
