Michelle Berrey has a rich and diverse work experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Michelle most recently served as the President of R&D and Chief Medical Officer at Intercept Pharmaceuticals since June 2021. Prior to that, they worked as a Scientific Advisor at ViiV Healthcare starting in October 2019. Michelle also worked as an Independent Consultant from February 2019.

Before their roles at ViiV Healthcare and as an Independent Consultant, Berrey held executive positions at Chimerix, Inc. from November 2012 to February 2019, including President & CEO and Chief Medical Officer. Michelle served as the Chief Medical Officer at Pharmasset from January 2007 to January 2012.

Berrey's earlier career included roles at GlaxoSmithKline, where they served as VP of Infectious Diseases in the Medicines Development Center from December 2006 to January 2007, and as VP of Clinical Pharmacology & Discovery Medicine from September 2004 to December 2006.

Michelle Berrey began their education at Oxford College of Emory University from 1984 to 1986, where they earned an Associate of Arts degree. Michelle then went on to complete their Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Emory University from 1984 to 1988. In 1989, they pursued further education at Medical Careers, earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in Medicine. Concurrently, they also pursued a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Public Health at Emory University from 1989 to 1992. Michelle continued their medical education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1993 to 1996, specializing in Internal Medicine through a Residency program. Finally, they completed an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Washington from 1996 to 1999.
