Richard Girgenti, a leading authority, lecturer, and author in the field of ethics and compliance and an experienced risk consultant to governments and businesses, is CEO and Managing Partner of IDPL Consulting, LLC. Previously, Rich held leadership positions at KPMG LLP, where he served as a board member, the U.S. and Americas leader of KPMG’s Forensic Advisory Services, and a member of KPMG’s Global Forensic Advisory Board. More recently, Rich served as a special advisor to the Office of the Chairman of KPMG LLP.

Prior to joining KPMG, Rich was appointed by the late Governor Mario M. Cuomo and confirmed by the NYS Senate as the New York State Director of Criminal Justice and Commissioner of the Division of Criminal Justice Services, where he oversaw and coordinated the policies, legislation, and initiatives of New York State’s criminal justice agencies, including the State Police and the Department of Corrections.

Rich also worked as a senior prosecutor under Robert M. Morgenthau in the New York County District Attorney’s Office. In this capacity, he ran the operations and intergovernmental and legislative affairs of a 500-plus-attorney law office. He also conducted investigations, trials, and appeals in both state and federal courts that included the prosecution of white collar, violent, and major narcotics organized crime cases.

Rich frequently lectures and writes on a range of topics designed to help organizations effectively manage the risks of misconduct. He is the co-author of two books—The New Era of Regulatory Enforcement: A Comprehensive Guide for Raising the Bar to Manage Risk (McGraw-Hill, 2016) and Managing the Risk of Fraud and Misconduct: Meeting the Challenges of a Global, Regulated, and Digital Environment (McGraw-Hill, 2011).

He is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and the International Association of Independent Corporate Monitors (IAICM).

As former board member at KPMG, Rich served as the chair of the Professional Practice, Ethics, and Compliance Committee and the Governance Task Force. While at KPMG, he was also the Executive Sponsor for KPMG’s Compliance Transformation Initiative and Chief Compliance Officer Exchange—a peer-to-peer roundtable for Fortune 350 chief compliance officers to share leading practices. He currently serves on the boards of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) NY Chapter, the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City, and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Foundation.

Rich has received numerous awards, including the Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Award (Citizens Crime Commission), the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Hogan-Morgenthau Award, and the New York State District Attorney’s Association Award.

Rich received his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center and his B.A. from Seton Hall University. He is admitted to practice law in New York. Rich also completed the Executive Coaching Strategies Program at Harvard University School of Continuing Education and the External Coaching Intensive Program at Columbia University’s Teachers College.
