Mohamed Bakr

AI Guild Lead at KION Group

Mohamed Bakr began their work experience in 2013 as a Bachelor Student at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) where they completed their bachelor project on non-linear adaptive control of unmanned helicopters. Mohamed then worked as a Junior Research Assistant at the Hamburg University of Technology from February 2017 to February 2018.

In 2018, Bakr joined STILL Gmbh as an Intern and later completed their Master Thesis, focusing on research and development of motion planning and control algorithms for autonomous mobile robots. During this time, they also worked on the derivation and implementation of new odometry kinematic models and an Error Variance Model for forklifts with single wheel drive.

Since 2019, Bakr has been working at the KION Group. Mohamed started as a Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Research Engineer, where they designed and implemented advanced driver assistance systems using Deep Learning and Computer Vision for forklifts. Mohamed also played a leading role in scientific research and management of the BMBF Research project DeepPTL, in collaboration with SICK AG and Freiburg University.

Currently, Bakr holds the position of AI Team Lead / Robotics and AI Expert at KION Group. In this role, they serve as the Project Manager for AI strategy and the AI platform, leading a team of 10 AI MLOPS developers and a labeling team. Mohamed has also been responsible for designing and implementing the AI pipeline for raw data image processing, labeling, training networks, and deployment using Kubeflow in Azure and GCP.

Mohamed Bakr attended The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2024, where they completed an MBA Essentials program in Business Administration and Management. Prior to that, from 2016 to 2018, they pursued a Master's degree in Intelligent Systems and Robotics at Hamburg University of Technology. Their undergraduate education was at The German University in Cairo from 2009 to 2014, where they obtained their Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, and Automation Engineering.
