Derek McHugh

Derek McHugh has a diverse work experience spanning various industries. In their most recent role as the Head of Data Science at Kitman Labs since December 2018, they lead a team in developing statistical and machine learning models to support sporting organizations in reducing injury risks and optimizing athlete performance. Derek effectively communicates with cross-functional teams to implement data-led solutions and is responsible for the data science strategy within the company.

Prior to that, from February 2018 to November 2018, Derek served as the Head of Data Analytics at Zurich Ireland, where they managed a team of data scientists and trainee actuaries. Derek provided valuable insights to different areas of the business using internal and external data, integrating new technologies into the team's analytical tools, and effectively communicating results to various levels of management.

Before working at Zurich Ireland, Derek held roles at University College Dublin and the Research Center for Quantum Information Bratislava. At University College Dublin, they served as a Research Information Officer from August 2008 to October 2012, and as a Lecturer in Mathematical Physics from September 2007 to August 2008. In these roles, they developed and delivered undergraduate courses in mathematical physics and conducted research on the application of quantum entanglement theory to Costas Arrays. Prior to that, as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Research Center for Quantum Information Bratislava from October 2005 to December 2006, Derek furthered their research in the field of quantum information.

Derek McHugh has a strong educational background in mathematics, physics, computing, and project management. Derek started their education journey at Trinity College Dublin, where they obtained a BA Mod in Theoretical Physics between 1995 and 1999. During this time, they also studied mathematics and computer programming. Continuing their studies in the field, Derek pursued an MSc in High Performance Computing at Trinity College Dublin from 1999 to 2000, focusing on computing and mathematics.

In 2001, Derek enrolled at Maynooth University to pursue a PhD in Mathematical Physics and Computing, which they completed in 2005. This advanced degree further strengthened their expertise in the intersection of mathematics and physics, along with their computing skills.

To broaden their professional qualifications, Derek pursued additional certifications outside of traditional academia. In 2011, they attended the Project Management Institute and obtained a Certified Associate in Project Management, enhancing their skills in project management. In 2008 and 2009, they engaged in Continuous Professional Development at Technological University Dublin, focusing on law.

Additionally, Derek sought knowledge in the wine and spirits industry. Derek attended the Dublin Wine Academy from 2011 to 2012 and obtained a WSET Level 3 Advance Award. This certification covered a wide range of topics, including wine, spirits, viniculture, viticulture, the wine and spirit industry, and tasting.

In terms of additional certifications, Derek successfully completed the C100DEV: MongoDB Certified Developer Associate Exam in December 2016, offered by MongoDB. This certification demonstrates their expertise in developing applications using MongoDB.
