Michelle Lewis

Michelle Lewis has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of intellectual property law. Michelle currently holds the position of Senior Director, IP Counsel at Meati, where they are responsible for building and protecting the intellectual property portfolio for innovative mushroom root-based meat substitute products and methods. Additionally, they serve as a legal liaison for collaborations and intellectual property licensing, and provides legal support for General Counsel in all other areas of the business.

Before joining Meati, Michelle worked as Counsel at Koley Jessen P.C., L.L.O., where they performed trademark searching and prosecution in manufacturing and services industries. Michelle also had a high volume IP due diligence practice for mid-sized M&A transactions and supported patent file history and claim analysis for patent litigation.

Prior to their role at Koley Jessen P.C., L.L.O., Michelle owned their own consulting firm called Michelle Lewis Consulting. As an Owner Consultant, they provided intellectual property consulting services to a diverse client group in various technology areas such as therapeutics, agriculture, bioinformatic software, vaccines, microbiome, and medical device innovation. Michelle also provided transactional and related contract support.

Their other past experiences include working as a Patent Attorney at Streck, where they handled intellectual property identification, protection, and assertion, collaborated on innovation program development and execution, and focused on turning biotechnology innovation into assets. Michelle was also the Director of IP and Licensing at Circuit Therapeutics, where they handled licensing and on-site intellectual property issues, reviewed patent portfolios, and provided advice for maximizing value and developing in-house processes.

Michelle has also worked as a Patent Counsel at Genentech, where they were a member of the oncology practice group with a focus on cancer immunology. Michelle supported product technical development, including early stage cell culture, and handled all phases of patent portfolio management. Michelle also served as the Vice President of Intellectual Property at Molecular Templates and as a Senior Patent Attorney at ZymoGenetics, Inc./Bristol Myers Squibb, where they managed and prosecuted worldwide patent portfolios for protein therapeutics and diagnostic inventions. Michelle also provided strategic advice on patent, trademark, and copyright issues.

Michelle Lewis has a Master of Science (MS) degree in Genetics from Columbia University. Michelle also holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biology from Duke University. In addition, Michelle has a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in Law from Rutgers Law School. Moreover, they have obtained certifications in Medical Neuroscience from Coursera Course Certificates in 2016 and as a Registered Patent Attorney from the USPTO in 1991.
