Richard C. Schmidt

Chief Science Officer at Medical Engineering Innovations (MEI)

Mr. Schmidt began working with MEI in 2011 and became the Chief Executive Officer in January, 2012. In October, 2020, he transitioned to the role of Chief Science Officer. Mr. Schmidt has extensive leadership and business experience in all aspects of development and commercialization of complex medical devices.

Before joining MEI, Mr. Schmidt was with Accuray (formerly TomoTherapy) for 11 years, starting as Tomotherapy’s first mechanical engineer. While at Accuray, Mr. Schmidt also served as Hardware Engineering Manager, Strategic Programs Manager and Senior Technologist. He hired, developed, led and mentored the hardware engineering teams that designed and commercialized the TomoTherapy Hi-ART system. The TomoTherapy system received FDA 510(k) approval and is now operational at over 500 cancer treatment facilities around the world, providing millions of cancer treatment fractions per year.

Mr. Schmidt has an undergraduate degree in Physics and a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has published papers in Nuclear Physics, Accelerator Physics, Medical Physics and a thesis on Free-Piston Engine Development. He is a co-inventor on patents for x-ray detectors and x-ray targets and has several patents pending.
