Job Title: Custodian and Building Coordinator

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Head of School      

Employee Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $20.00-$25.00 per hour

Daily Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:00pm (30 minute break)

Job Summary

The Custodian/Building Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role combines the duties of a custodian with additional responsibilities related to overseeing the building's daily operations, ensuring all systems are functioning properly, and coordinating maintenance activities.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with school staff, students, and visitors.
  • Foster a positive and respectful working environment.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities that relate to this position.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Head of School.
  • Conduct daily upkeep and inspections of the school buildings and grounds, including the playground, to identify maintenance needs and safety hazards.
  • Replenish supplies in restrooms and other designated areas as needed.
  • Ensure all areas are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness.
  • Respond to spills, accidents, and emergencies promptly.
  • Maintain custodial equipment and supplies, ensuring they are in good working condition.
  • Follow established procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment.
  • Coordinate and oversee maintenance and repair work in collaboration with the head of school and controller, ensuring timely completion.
  • Monitor HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems, reporting issues to the Head of School.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of outside contractors as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and school policies.
  • Assist in setting up and breaking down for school events and activities.
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities and inventory of supplies.
  • Respond to building-related emergencies during and outside of regular working hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in custodial work or building maintenance.

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.

  • Basic understanding of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical).

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).

  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including climbing ladders and standing for extended periods.

  • Relevant certifications in building maintenance or custodial work are a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in a school environment, with children as young as 8 weeks-8th grade.

  • The role requires physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • It may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals and equipment noise.
