Thomas Hammes

Thomas Hammes is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies, National Defense University, specializing in strategy, potential conflicts with China, insurgency, counterinsurgency, and future conflicts since January 2009. Hammes has a notable background as a Marine officer from 1975 to July 2005, where leadership roles included commanding various units such as infantry battalions and the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force, and holds the rank of Colonel (Retired). Educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Operations Analysis from the US Naval Academy and a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Modern History from Oxford University.
