Clay Matthews started their career as a Professor at Jefferson Davis Community College in 1995. Clay then moved on to work as an Associate at Miller & Martin PLLC from 2000 to 2002. After that, they worked as an Associate at Patton Boggs LLP in 2002. From 2003 to 2006, they worked as an Associate Attorney at Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz. Finally, they became the Chief Intellectual Property Counsel at NewMarket Corporation in 2012, where they are currently employed.

Clay Matthews pursued their education by first attending The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1987 to 1990. During this time, they earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry. Clay then went on to enroll at The University of Alabama, where they studied from 1990 to 1995 and obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry. In 1997, Matthews ventured into the field of law and enrolled at UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law, completing their Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree in 2000.
