Prof. Marco Briceno

Chief Medical Officer at Northern Territory Government

Prof. Marco Briceno has a diverse work experience spanning multiple organizations and roles. Prof. Marco currently serves as the CEO of Northern Territory Health, starting in October 2022. Prior to this, they worked as the Chief Medical Officer for the Northern Territory Government starting in August 2022. Prof. Marco also held the position of A/Deputy Chief Health Officer from December 2021 to August 2022.

Prof. Briceno's academic experience includes being a Professor in the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University since October 2010.

In terms of healthcare practice, they served as the Medical Director of the NT Rural Generalist Pathway for the NT Department of Health from June 2020 to October 2022. Prof. Marco was also the Chief Medical Advisor for the Northern Territory Department of Health from April 2021 to August 2022.

Prof. Briceno's earlier career included roles at the Gove District Hospital and East Arnhem Region Primary Health Care Branch. Prof. Marco held the position of Director of Medical Services, Education, and Training / Senior Rural Generalist Surgeon from October 2015 to August 2022. Prior to this, they were a Senior Rural Generalist Surgeon from November 2013 to August 2022. Prof. Marco initially joined Gove District Hospital as a Senior Rural Medical Practitioner in October 2008 until October 2013, during which time they also trained as a Rural Medical Practitioner.

Before moving to Australia, Prof. Briceno gained experience in the UK, working as a Specialist Training Registrar in Trauma & Orthopaedics at Good Hope Hospital from April 2008 to August 2008. Prof. Marco also held the position of Specialist Training Registrar in General Surgery at Good Hope Hospital from December 2007 to April 2008. Earlier in their career, they worked as a Specialist Training Registrar in Trauma & Orthopaedics at Sandwell General Hospital from August 2007 to December 2007.

Prof. Marco Briceno holds an Associate Fellowship in Health Service Management from the Australasian College of Health Service Management. Prof. Marco also obtained a degree in Medicine (Medico Cirujano - BMBS) from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 2001. In addition, they completed their Basic Surgical Training and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS Eng) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008. Lastly, Prof. Briceno earned a Fellowship from the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) in 2013.
