Joel Spicer has extensive experience in the field of global health and nutrition. Joel has held various leadership positions in organizations such as Nutrition International, where they served as President and CEO since 2017, and the Micronutrient Initiative, where they held the same position from 2014 to 2017. Prior to that, they worked at the World Health Organization as a Senior Strategist, Stop TB Partnership from 2010 to 2013. Joel also worked at The World Bank as a Senior Health Specialist, Africa HNP from 2007 to 2010, and at the Ministry of Health - Indonesia as a Consultant for GFATM Grant Implementation from 2006 to 2007. Joel Spicer has a background in tuberculosis strategy and operations, having worked as a Tuberculosis Strategy and Operations Technical Officer at the World Health Organization from 2004 to 2005. Joel also has experience in HIV/AIDS, having served as an HIV/AIDS Officer at UNICEF's West and Central Africa Regional Office from 2003 to 2004. Joel Spicer started their career at the Government of Canada, where they worked as a Program Manager for the Program Against Hunger, Malnutrition, and Disease at CIDA from 1998 to 2003.

Joel Spicer has a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Health Policy and Management from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, which they obtained from 2005 to 2006. Joel also has a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Development Studies from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), completed from 1997 to 1998. In addition, Joel holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in International Relations from The University of British Columbia, earned between 1992 and 1996. Alongside their formal education, Joel has obtained several certifications, including an Executive Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership, Public narrative: Leadership, Storytelling, and Action Program, Leadership and Character in Uncertain Times, and Mobilizing Your Non-Profit Board, all from Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education.
