Shane Dinnan has a diverse work experience in various industries. Shane started their career in 1994 as a Fund Reporting Analyst at Trustees Executors Limited. Shane then joined M-co NZ in 1996, where they held various roles including Owner, Director, and GM Market Operations. At M-co, they were responsible for setting the vision and executing the operational strategic plan in the energy and financial services business. Shane provided specialist technical advice to clients on electricity market design, wholesale and retail market operations, and financial risk management.

After leaving M-co in 2009, Shane took a career break and focused on raising their young children, travelling, and developing their professional capabilities. In 2011, they established Birr Advisory & Consulting, where they provided specialist advice on strategic and operational initiatives in the energy sector and advised business owners on start-up functions, acquisitions, capital raising plans, and governance.

Shane also had a brief role as the Head of Energy Market Operations (transitional) at NZX in 2009 before returning to NZX in 2014 as the Head of Energy & Carbon Markets. In this position, they led NZX's energy market business and its growing carbon market activities, overseeing the delivery of trading and information systems, grid reconciliation, and wholesale market clearing services.

Prior to their career in the energy sector, Shane co-owned Sams Art House in 2012.

Shane Dinnan began their education at St Patrick's College Silverstream, although the specific start and end dates are unknown. Shane then attended Massey University from 1991 to 1993, where they obtained a Bachelor of Business Studies with a concentration in Finance. In 1998 and 1999, they returned to Massey University to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Banking. In 2000, Shane attended Victoria University of Wellington for a General Management Programme. Later, in 2007, they participated in the Executive Program for Growing Companies at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.
