Michael Kotelyanskii

Principal Research Scientist, Metrology Advanced R&d at Onto Innovation

Michael Kotelyanskii has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of research and development of optical metrology techniques for semiconductor manufacturing processes. Michael is currently working at Onto Innovation as a Principal Research Scientist in Metrology Advanced R&D. Prior to this, they held roles at Onto Innovation as a Staff Research Scientist in MBU Advanced R&D and as a Senior member of technical Staff in CTG.

Before joining Onto Innovation, Michael worked at Rudolph Technologies as a Senior member of technical Staff in the Core Technology Group, where they led research and development projects in optical metrology techniques for semiconductor manufacturing processes. Michael managed a team of PhD scientists and software developers, collaborated with marketing and sales teams on product roadmaps and new applications development, and provided technical leadership and project management.

Michael also has experience working as a Visiting Research Professor at NJIT, Physics Department, where they conducted research in Mueller matrix ellipsometry, multi-ferroics, and metamaterials. Michael supervised graduate students and post-docs and co-PI on an NSF-funded project.

In addition, they worked as a Research Associate at Pennsylvania State University, Polymer Science Program, conducting research in statistical mechanics and phase transitions in polymers. Michael also taught graduate level courses in Statistical Thermodynamics.

Before their time at Pennsylvania State University, Michael worked as a Research Associate at the University of Delaware, Department of Chemical Engineering, conducting research on the properties of amorphous polymers and polymer membranes, specifically in the area of reverse osmosis and water desalination.

Michael also had the opportunity to work as a Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany through a Max-Planck Fellowship.

Earlier in their career, Michael worked as a Research Associate at the N.N.Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, where they studied and worked on their PhD project, focusing on computer simulations of amorphous and polymer materials.

Michael Kotelyanskii completed their undergraduate studies at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (State University) (MIPT) from 1981 to 1987, receiving an M.Sc. degree in Materials Physics. Michael then pursued further education at N.N. Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Polymer Materials Physics from 1987 to 1992. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications including "The Data Scientist's Toolbox" from Coursera in March 2015, "Mining Massive Datasets" from Coursera in November 2014, "Computational Investing, Part I" from Coursera in November 2013, and "Machine Learning" from Coursera in August 2013.
