Andrew Sommerlot, PhD has been working in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning since 2013. In 2013, they were a Technical Writer at INSTRUMENTED SENSOR TECHNOLOGY, INC, where they wrote and illustrated user manuals for shock and vibration sensors deployed in the shipping industry. From 2014 to 2016, they were a PhD Candidate at Virginia Tech, where they applied Deep Learning, Bayesian, and advanced physics models to solve large scale, high resolution, and rapid update problems. During this time, they also designed, built, and launched web-map based forecast tools as components of decision support systems under UDSA Grant. From 2016 to 2018, they were a Research Scientist and Modeling Analyst at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, where they scrubbed and analyzed various data sources to develop functional, client-facing model applications and conducted data input preparation and output analysis with descriptive and inferential statistical methods. From 2018 to 2021, they were the Director of Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence and Lead Machine Learning Engineer / Machine Learning Engineer at Senseye, Inc. Currently, they are the Lead AI/ML Engineer at PLNAR.

Andrew Sommerlot, PhD obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biological Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech. Prior to that, they earned a Master of Science (MS) in Biosystems Engineering from Michigan State University, as well as a Bachelor of Science - BS in Biosystems Engineering from the same institution. In 2017-2018, Andrew completed coursework in Artificial Intelligence from Udacity. In October 2009, they obtained an Engineer In Training (EIT) certification from NCEES.
