Job description

Providence Hall is a charter school located in Herriman UT. Central to the school's mission is teaching students to think critically, communicate effectively, and act responsibly. 

Providence Hall is seeking part-time seasonal bus drivers to transport our students and teams. 

Responsibilities:

  • Transport students to and from school or authorized locations in a safe, professional, and timely manner specified by the LEA.

  • Conduct extensive pre-trip/post-trip bus inspections and maintains necessary records to ensure the proper operation of the school bus and assist in meeting State and Federal requirements.

  • Load and unload students in a safe fashion (using special equipment, if needed).

  • Perform daily maintenance and cleaning of assigned bus.

  • Maintain order and discipline on the school bus at all times as would be expected in the classroom according to established guidelines set by the LEA.

  • Adhere to all LEA, Utah DOT and other applicable policies, rules, and guidelines.

  • Maintain and submit required records, documents, forms, and reports (e.g., mileage reports, time slips, Federal/State student counts, left and right logs, map and route descriptions).

  • Initiate actions to review serious and chronic discipline problems and how significant input into how the problem should be resolved, and may meet with or communication with parents/guardians, students, and/or school administrators concerning student needs or discipline problems.

  • Instruct all students proper bus procedures (e.g., loading, unloading, safety procedures, evacuation).

  • Monitor student behavior while under bus driver supervision and implement behavior program in cooperation with Transportation Coordinator and school administrators.

  • Monitor health and safety of bus riders and provide assistance during times of physical distress, administering basic first aid as needed.

  • May be responsible for supervising emotionally and physically disabled students, with the assistance of special education paraprofessional if one has been assigned to the student.

  • Participate in highway patrol inspections and testing annually, and randomly, if directed.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to support the transportation department and school in general.

  • Maintain effective communication channels to ensure a collaborative school community.

  • Actively participate in assigned meetings, professional developments, and other trainings.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

  • CDL license with proper endorsements (MANDT training may be required).

  • 1 year of demonstrated safe driving competence (preferred).

  • Desire to operate various types of buses (30 - 40 feet in length) effectively and safely even under adverse road conditions.

  • Ability to understand road signs, traffic laws, rules and regulations according to the traffic codes of the State of Utah as outlined in the CDL driving manual.

  • Mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.

  • Excellent motor skills (e.g. hand-eye-foot-coordination, ability to recognize hazardous situations, quick and safe reactions).

  • Skills needed to relate well with students of all ages and students with special needs.

  • Self-motivation and be proactive in completing tasks with minimal direction.

  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to multitask easily.

  • Positive interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to maintain calm in high-stress situations.

  • Willing to effectively problem-solve as needed.

  • Basic knowledge of Google Workspace and its collaboration tools.

  • Basic competence in reading, writing and math.

  • Successfully complete bi-annual completion of the Utah State Office of Education Physical Performance Assessment standards for Utah School Bus Drivers.

  • Complete defensive driving courses, first aid training, and other annual in-service training that are provided by the school according to the guidelines established by the State of Utah.

  • Maintain a continuing good driving record as a condition of employment.

  • Punctual regularly for scheduled shifts.

  • Capacity to perform all the responsibilities listed in this posting.

  • Must pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history, and professional references as a condition of employment.

  • Subject to pre-hire and random drug screening.

  • Maintain UDOT Commercial Driver Fitness Form.

Physical Requirements - Not limited to the following:

  • Frequent continuous sitting (up to 3 hours at a time);

  • Eye/hand coordination and operating of foot controls without visualizing;

  • Occasional lifting from floor to waist and carrying of up to 50 pounds;

  • Pulling/dragging up to 125 pounds;

  • Kneeling in awkward positions;

  • Ascending/descending bus stairs;

  • Constant near visual acuity, far visual acuity, color vision and hearing; and

  • Job stress due to adverse weather conditions, pressures to meet schedules, student behavior, medical problems (e.g. seizures) and the responsibility for the safety of students.
