POSITION SUMMARY

The Dental Hygienist will play a vital role in meeting the dental health care needs of the SSTHP patient population. Incumbent will provide quality disease prevention/systematic health promotion care, governed by general Indian Health Services guidelines, specific SSTHP policies and relevant laws published by the Dental Board of California. This is a full-time position (32 hours/week). The specific negotiated salary within the range will be based on training and experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Oral health education (to individuals and groups)
  2. Instruction in oral hygiene techniques
  3. Completes dental prophylaxis by cleaning deposits and stains from teeth and from above and beneath gum margins.
  4. Collaborative “disease detective”. Always alert to visual and tactile discovery of suspicious lesions in and around the oral cavity.
  5. Taking of radiographs as needed
  6. Employ various cavity prevention methods, such as sealants, fluoride varnish and topical fluoride application.
  7. Administration of Nitrous Oxide sedation under direct supervision of the Dentist
  8. Administration of Local Anesthesia under direct supervision of the Dentist
  9. Assist in the training of other auxiliary staff
  10. Participate in the planning and implementation of community outreach activities
  11. Assist with general housekeeping, instrument cleaning and sterilization
  12. Other adjunctive services as prescribed by the supervising Dentist and as allowed by law

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Certificate/ Degree from an accredited School of Dental Hygiene or Dentistry
  2. Licensed to practice Dental Hygiene or Dentistry by the Dental Board of California
  3. Radiation safety certification
  4. Post job offer: CPR/BLS certification, TB test, and annual flu shot (during flu season) are required as a condition of employment, unless a medical/religious accommodation request is provided. Hepatitis B Vaccine will be offered at no cost to employees, but it is not required.

NATIVE PREFERENCE

Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
