Wm. Derrick Whitney

Wm. Derrick Whitney is an accomplished technology leader with extensive experience in digital engagement, data strategy, and IT operations. Currently serving as Chief of Engagement Solutions at the Smithsonian Institution since June 2019, Whitney provides direction for developing and enhancing audience engagement digital services. Previous roles include Director of Advancement Information Technology at the Smithsonian, where responsibilities encompassed managing advancement technology and data operations, and Interim Chief Data Officer, leading the institution's data strategy. At the University of Colorado, Whitney held the position of Director of Technical Architecture and Projects, overseeing technology design across multiple campuses. Additional experience includes significant roles at Oracle as Enterprise Tools Architect and Sun Microsystems as IT Operations Manager, along with various early career positions in IT operations and management. Wm. Derrick Whitney holds bachelor's degrees in Computer Information Systems and Computer and Information Sciences from the Metropolitan State University of Denver.
