R. Cengiz Ertekin has a diverse work experience in the field of ocean engineering and hydrodynamics. R. Cengiz began their career as a Model Tank Test Engineer at Istanbul Technical University in 1977 before working as a Design Engineer at Chevron in 1980. Following this, Ertekin served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Berkeley in 1984 and an Associate Research Engineer at Shell Oil Company in 1985. R. Cengiz then joined the University of Hawaii, Dept. of Ocean and Resources Engineering in 1986, where they worked as a Professor of Ocean Engineering and Hydrodynamics for almost 30 years, until 2015. Most recently, since 2013, Ertekin has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ocean Engineering and Marine Energy at Springer Science+Business Media.

R. Cengiz Ertekin has an impressive education history in the fields of naval architecture, offshore engineering, and marine engineering. R. Cengiz began their academic journey at The Technical University of Istanbul, where they pursued a Dipl. Eng. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from 1972 to 1977. Following this, Ertekin joined the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, for their higher studies. At Berkeley, they obtained their first master's degree, an MS in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering, which they completed from 1979 to 1980. R. Cengiz later returned to Berkeley to pursue a Ph.D. in Offshore Engineering, which they successfully completed in the years 1982 to 1984. Ertekin's educational background demonstrates their commitment to gaining knowledge and expertise in their chosen fields of study.
