Michael Wise

Director General and Scientific Director at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research

Michael Wise has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of astrophysics and space research. Michael currently holds the position of General and Scientific Director at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research since January 2019. In addition, they are a Professor of High-Energy Astrophysics at the University of Amsterdam since 2021.

Before their current roles, they served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Amsterdam from 2010 to 2020. Prior to that, they had various positions at ASTRON, including Senior Staff Astronomer, Head of the Astronomy Group, LOFAR Project Scientist, Staff Astronomer, and LOFAR Project Manager, from 2006 to 2018.

Earlier in their career, Michael worked as a Staff Research Scientist at MIT's Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research and as a Staff Scientist at Chandra X-ray Science Center from 1994 to 2005. Michael started their journey in astrophysics as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Kitt Peak National Observatory from 1992 to 1994.

Overall, Michael Wise has a strong background in astrophysics, space research, and academia, with significant experience in research, leadership, and project management.

Michael Wise earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Astrophysics from Indiana University Bloomington from 1983 to 1986. Michael then pursued a Master of Science degree in Astronomy at the University of Virginia from 1986 to 1988. Finally, they obtained a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Virginia, completing their studies from 1988 to 1992.
