Charles Obrien

Mechanical Design Engineer at Symbotic

Charles O'Brien has extensive work experience as a mechanical design engineer and senior mechanical designer. Charles has worked in various companies such as Symbotic, AES Corporation, Desktop Metal, Jabil Kasalis, Genturi, Photo Diagnostic Systems Inc., Endeavor Robotics, Vecna Cares Charitable Trust, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and Rethink Robotics.

At Symbotic, Charles worked as a mechanical design engineer, focusing on fixturing for test and production. Charles was responsible for tasks such as concept, design, modeling, documentation, quoting, purchasing, incoming inspection, assembly, and qualifying the fixtures.

At AES Corporation, they served as a senior mechanical design engineer, where they established engineering protocols for the documentation of the company's product line. Charles also performed reverse engineering of existing products and created parts and assemblies for new product lines.

At Desktop Metal, Charles worked as a senior mechanical designer and was involved in the verification and construction of Solidworks assemblies for a large-scale 3D printing platform.

During their time at Jabil Kasalis, they held the role of senior mechanical designer and rapidly produced Solidworks CAD parts, assemblies, and documentation for a new lens positioning system.

Charles also gained experience as a senior mechanical design engineer at Genturi, where they developed and documented mirror mounts for a laser-based DNA scanner.

At Photo Diagnostic Systems Inc., they worked as a senior mechanical designer, focusing on the rapid turnaround of Solidworks files to meet contractual obligations.

Charles worked as a mechanical designer at Endeavor Robotics, where they utilized Creo 3 and Windchill 10 CAD/Data platforms to rebuild failed assemblies and process engineering change notices (ECNs).

At Vecna Cares Charitable Trust, they served as a mechanical engineer, providing CAD and design advice for in-house projects. Charles was also involved in cost reduction and design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA).

During their time at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Charles worked as a senior mechanical designer and program manager. Charles participated in a pilot program to improve the availability of skilled personnel for projects and rebuilt and remodeled a legacy optical test system using SolidWorks.

At Rethink Robotics, they held the position of senior mechanical designer and was responsible for the design documentation and assembly of fixtures to aid in the assembly of new products.

Charles O'Brien completed their education at the Wentworth Institute of Technology from 1975 to 1985. Charles obtained an Associates Science degree in Machine Design Technology, with a specialization in Mechanical Engineering. In addition, Charles obtained a certification as a Certified Solidworks Associate from SolidWorks-CADCAMCIM Inc. in October 2014.
