Michael McConnell

Senior Scientist at Synthetic Genomics

Michael McConnell has extensive experience in the field of biofuel development, particularly in the study of photo-physiology of algae at production scale. Michael worked as a Senior Scientist at Viridos in 2021-2022 and again in 2023. Before that, they served as a Senior Scientist at Molecular Templates in 2019-2021. Michael was also a Senior scientist at Algenol in 2015-2018. Michael started their career as an M.Sc. student at Brock University in 2000 and went on to obtain a Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 2008. Michael worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Postdoctoral Research Scholar at Arizona State University, where they conducted research on biofuel/bioenergy production in algae and electron transfer in Type I RCs from eukaryotic algae. Michael also worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Creighton University as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, doing bioprospecting for sustainable biofuel production.

Michael McConnell completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences at Brock University in 2000. Michael then pursued their Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences at the same university from 2000 to 2002. Afterwards, they attended Arizona State University from 2002 to 2008, where they obtained their Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Plant Biology. Michael also received a certification in The Secret: What Great Leaders Know and Do (getAbstract Summary) from LinkedIn in September 2020.
