Tanja van Loon has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Tanja began their career in 1999 as a customer service and cashier at Albert Heijn supermarket. From 2003 to 2009, they worked at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in fieldwork, material studies, and as a student assistant. During this time, they also served as an editor for the Tijdschrift voor Mediterrane Archeologie journal. In 2006, they completed an internship at Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici di Roma. Tanja then joined Rijksuniversiteit Groningen again in 2010 as a PhD-candidate in Archaeology, where they were awarded a highly competitive grant for their research. In 2017, they conducted archaeology workshops as part of their freelance work and through University of Melbourne. Tanja also gained teaching experience as a sessional tutor and teaching associate at University of Melbourne, where they taught various courses and provided support to first-year students. In 2018, they joined TALY Australia as a Research Assistant, showcasing their skills in report writing and data analysis using Microsoft Excel. Tanja van Loon completed their education at the University of Groningen. From 2002 to 2005, they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology. Tanja then pursued further studies at the same institution and earned a Master of Arts degree in Research master Material culture studies in Art History and Archaeology from 2005 to 2009.
