Dirk van Zijl's work experience began in 2012, when they worked as an ICT Technician at Yokogawa for two months. Dirk then worked as an ICT Technician at Cargill for three months before transitioning to the role of ICT Service Manager at SCA - Hygiene and Forest Products Company, where they worked for one year. Dirk then moved on to work as an ICT Service Manager at Radboudumc for two years. In 2015, they became an ICT Support Engineer at Vestia for six months. In 2016, Dirk had a short-term role as an ICT Specialist at Ashland Inc, where they worked for five months. Dirk also worked as an ICT Technician for six months at Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal. Dirk then worked as an IT Support professional at OGD ict-diensten for six years. In 2022, they became a Donor Relations Manager at Korzo, where they are responsible for the development and implementation of the donation and fundraising strategy. Most recently, Dirk started working as a Product Owner at TOPdesk in October 2020.

From 2001 to 2007, they attended Utrecht University, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Science and Innovation Management.

Dirk continued their education at Utrecht University from 2008 to 2012, during which they pursued a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Energy Science.

In addition to their academic achievements, Dirk van Zijl obtained a certification in Professional Scrum Product Owner I training (PSPO I) from Scrum.org in October 2020.
