Head Of History at Tormead School

Helen Carrel has a diverse work experience that spans over several years. Helen currently holds the position of Head of History at Tormead School in Guildford, a role they have been in since August 2020. Prior to this, they served as the Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Oxbridge Co-ordinator (Arts) and Teacher of History at the same school from September 2019 to August 2020. Helen also worked as a History Teacher and Oxbridge Co-ordinator (Arts) at Tormead School from September 2018 to August 2020.

Before joining Tormead School, Helen held the position of Co-ordinator of Gifted and Talented as well as a Teacher of History at Salesian College in Farnborough from September 2011 to August 2018.

Helen'scareer began with research positions, including one as a Research Assistant at the University of York from January 2008 to June 2010, and another as a Lecturer in Medieval History at Fordham University from January 2009 to June 2009. Helen also served as a Visiting Lecturer at Royal Holloway, University of London from September 2008 to April 2009. Helen started their career as a Research Assistant at the University of Exeter from January 2005 to April 2005.

Helen Carrel's education history is as follows:

In 1999, Helen Carrel earned a Bachelor's Degree in History from the University of Cambridge. Helen then pursued a Master's Degree in Medieval Studies at the University of York from 2002 to 2003.

From 2003 to 2007, Helen attended the University of Cambridge again, where they completed their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in British Medieval History.

In 2010 and 2011, Helen Carrel furthered their education at the UCL Institute of Education, obtaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary History Teaching. Helen'sfocus during this time was on Secondary Education and Teaching.

In 2015 and 2016, Helen Carrel enrolled in the Surrey Schools Teaching Network to earn a National Professional Qualification in Middle Leadership, specializing in Education Management.

Currently, from 2021 to 2025, Helen Carrel is studying at the Historical Association, working towards achieving a Chartered Teacher qualification in Historical Education.
