Sam Lupton

Sam Lupton has a diverse work experience. In 2014, they attended the University of Oxford, where they studied linguistic theory, Russian language and literature, and was awarded a scholarship in their first year for academic performance. In 2016, they worked as a Trade Representative for the SNS Group of Companies in Vladivostok, Russia, where they were responsible for distributing tobacco products and energy drinks and negotiating with store owners. In 2019, they interned at Cuvva, where they made potential savings of £3,000-£5,000/month from improving ad targeting. Sam also attended General Assembly for a 13-week course designed for training future data scientists. Later that year, they were hired as a Data Scientist at Cuvva, where they were solely responsible for implementing machine learning algorithms. In 2020, they joined TouchNote as a Data Scientist, where they were awarded individual contributor of the year in 2022. Sam was then promoted to Data Lead, managing a team of 5 and helping develop the company's strategy through stats, visualisation and thought leadership. Sam also helped build out the data platform, maintained data quality and resilience, and implemented proper approaches to Redshift distkeys and sortkeys. Sam then rebuilt the entire Looker instance from scratch, moved the ETL stack, and used the new ETL and Looker stack to unify data. Sam also implemented a custom algorithm to predict LTV, oversaw a microservice implementation of an in-app recommendation algorithm, used weak supervision to overcome issues in training data, generated weekly insights, and trained the whole team in the new Looker instance.

Sam Lupton completed a Data Science Immersive program at General Assembly in 2019. Sam then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts - BA from the University of Oxford in Russian & Linguistics. In addition, they have obtained a CS50 certification from CS50 in December 2022 and a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification from TEFL Institute in August 2016.
