Director, Innovation And Learning at Turnaround for Children

Joel Scott has a diverse work experience spanning over multiple organizations and roles.

At Turnaround for Children, they hold the position of VP, Applied Practice & Research, where they lead internal projects, external partnerships, and collaborations with co-research organizations to advance transformative change in schools. Joel focuses on equity, design principles, and the science of learning and development to drive initiatives, practice change, and tool refinement. Joel also manages the Applied Practice and Research team.

As a Partnership Director at Turnaround, they secured over $3 million in grants and developed partner relationships and vision towards impact. Joel leads Turnaround in a three-year partnership to accelerate student outcomes and leader retention in the SLOCC Initiative with MSDF and TNTP.

Previously, Joel served as a Leadership Development Coach, where they created, designed, and facilitated training sessions for district leaders and principals, focusing on knowledge building, the science of learning and development, change management, system development, team development, and communication.

Before that, they worked as an Instructional Coach, leading professional development and systematic change for leadership to improve school environments and student outcomes. Joel also created and delivered curriculum to school personnel through small and whole school professional development sessions.

Joel's work experience also includes being a Graduate Fellow at Education Pioneers, where they completed a high-impact project for the NYC Department of Education Office of Teacher Effectiveness and Development Design Team. Joel conducted an in-depth analysis of Learning Opportunity videos related to highly effective teacher practice.

Additionally, they served as a Lead Teacher/Junior Associate at Professional Prep Charter School - TFOA, where they implemented inquiry-based, student culture-centered curriculum and classroom environment. Their approach resulted in 91% of students finishing the year reading on grade level.

Earlier in their career, Joel worked at Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey as a Senior Teacher/Orientation & Assessment Coordinator. In this role, they supervised and mentored a teaching staff of 12, designed curriculum and assessments for all education levels, and provided professional development to address student communication, pedagogy, instruction, and assessments.

With their extensive experience in education, leadership development, research, and partnership building, Joel Scott brings valuable expertise to the organizations they have worked with.

Joel Scott completed their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Psychology and Africana Studies from Binghamton University from the year 2000 to 2003. Joel then pursued further education and obtained their Masters of Science degree in Education from Brooklyn College, attending from 2011 to 2014. In April 2014, they also obtained an Initial Teaching Certificate for Grades 1-6 from NYSED.
