Thomas Smith has a wide range of work experience in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology. Thomas currently holds the role of Senior Manager Bioinformatics Science at TwinStrand Biosciences, where they oversee the bioinformatics team. Prior to this, they worked as a Bioinformatics Research Manager and Bioinformatics Scientist at the same company.

Before joining TwinStrand Biosciences, Thomas worked at NanoString Technologies, Inc. as a Scientist I - Computational Biology in the Translational Sciences Group. In this role, they provided data processing and analysis support for various projects, with a focus on clinical transcriptional profiling and biomarker development.

Thomas also has experience in academia, having worked as a Senior Fellow at the University of Washington and a Computational Genomics Teaching Assistant at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In these positions, they gained expertise in teaching bioinformatics tools and analyzing NGS data.

Thomas started their career as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California San Diego, where they conducted research in the field of protease-activated receptors. Thomas completed their PhD in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at the University of California San Diego, where they focused on characterizing the trafficking and heterodimerization of protease-activated receptor 4 (PAR4) for their thesis project. Thomas earned six publications during their graduate studies, two of which were directly related to their thesis work.

Thomas began their academic journey as a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where they gained research experience in their early years.

Thomas Smith earned their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Hendrix College, where they studied from 2005 to 2009. Following that, they pursued a specialization in Biomedical Sciences and obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from UC San Diego, completing their studies from 2009 to 2016. In addition to their formal education, they also obtained a certification in Python for Genomic Data Science from Coursera Course Certificates in July 2016.
