Joe Chan

Joe Chan has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Joe is currently the Head of Engineering at Valo, a position they have held since October 2021. Prior to that, they worked at PathAI from January 2020 to October 2021, holding the role of Director of Machine Learning.

Joe's longest tenure was at Google, where they worked for over 12 years as a Director of Software Engineering from September 2007 to January 2020. In this role, they specialized in designing, constructing, and operating high-performance, planet-scale serving systems. Joe was responsible for managing development and deployment costs, software and system design, project management, and handling production emergencies. Joe also mentored their team members and actively contributed to coding when needed.

Before joining Google, Joe worked at Sun Microsystems, Inc. as a Staff Engineer from February 2002 to September 2007. During this time, they focused on the x64 blade service embedded management software, working on the entire software stack and emphasizing multi-threaded C development.

Joe's career started at Cradle Technologies, Inc., where they worked as a Senior Software Engineer from September 2000 to July 2001. In this role, they worked on deeply embedded firmware for the programmable I/O subsystem, validating the design of the PIO portion of the UMS chip. Joe implemented various interfaces using the PIO, such as I2S audio, ITU-656 style video input, and an IEEE-1394a interface.

Prior to Cradle Technologies, Joe had brief experiences at ICE, Inc. as a MacOS Engineer for three months and at Mediabridge Technologies, Inc. as a MacOS Engineer from January 1998 to June 2000. At Mediabridge Technologies, they played a significant role in rewriting portions of the DataFlow QuarkXPress plugin and providing technical support.

Joe Chan has a strong education background in the field of aerospace engineering and aeronautics. Joe started their educational journey at Boston University, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from 1988 to 1991. After that, they pursued further studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At MIT, Joe earned a Master of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics between 1991 and 1994. Joe continued their education at MIT and completed their PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from 1994 to 1997.
