Nathan Harkenrider

Nathan Harkenrider is the current VP of Engineering at Vareto. Prior to joining Vareto, Nathan served as the VP of Engineering at Smartsheet from September 2013 to October 2021. In this role, Nathan led an organization of nearly 100 engineers who owned many of Smartsheet's core platform, enterprise enablement, and governance capabilities. This included the sheet "engine" and storage services, authentication and authorization, user administration, and cloud infrastructure.

Prior to their role at Smartsheet, Nathan served as the Director of Engineering at Optify - Digital Marketing Software from January 2011 to September 2013. In this role, Nathan took over management of the engineering team and continued duties as the system architect. Nathan drove early prototyping of new technologies that were later leveraged for some of the most popular features of the product. Nathan also set standards for SOA design and architecture to ensure consistency in design and implementation across all Optify services.

Nathan has a proven track record in leading engineering teams and driving continuous improvement to availability, reliability, and performance. Nathan is an expert in architecting for enterprise scale and decomposing monolithic components into standalone services. Nathan is a collaborative leader who has worked closely with Product Management, Operations, and Executive leadership to achieve success for their organizations.

Nathan Harkenrider has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Seattle University. Nathan has a certification from Coursera in Functional Programming Principles in Scala.

Nathan Harkenrider reports to Kat Orekhova, Co-Founder & CEO. They are on a team with Jeff Yarnell - Director of Data Platform, William (BJ) Ebert - Head of Customer Success, and Chris Barrows - Head of Product Management.
