Professor Markos Zachariadis has a diverse range of work experience in the field of financial technology (FinTech) and information systems. Professor Markos is currently the Founding Director of the Centre for Financial Technology Studies (CFTS) at The University of Manchester, where they lead research and knowledge-sharing initiatives focused on digital advancements in finance, including cryptocurrency, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. Professor Markos also holds the position of Full Professor and Chair in FinTech & Information Systems at Alliance Manchester Business School.

In addition to their academic roles, Professor Zachariadis is actively involved in shaping the future of resilient financial systems as a Lead for Technology & Financial Innovation in the GF Council on the Future of Resilient Financial Systems at the World Economic Forum. Professor Markos is also a member of the Global Future Councils on Responsive Financial Systems and Financial & Monetary Systems, contributing their expertise to analyze emerging trends, risks, and opportunities in the global financial and monetary landscape.

Furthermore, Professor Zachariadis serves as an Advisory Board Member for the ADGM Academy Research Centre, focusing on research initiatives related to financial technology. Professor Markos is a Founding Member and Chair of the UK FinTech Academic Network (UKFAN), a research community that drives innovative R&D in technology within the financial services sector.

Professor Markos'sinvolvement in industry initiatives extends to the Open Banking Expert Consumer Group at Open Banking, where they contribute insights on consumer perspectives in the open banking ecosystem. Professor Zachariadis is also a member of the Steering Committee for Project FAIR at The Alan Turing Institute, working on the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in the financial services industry.

Past experiences include positions such as FinTech Research Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Digital Innovation at the University of Cambridge and Affiliated Faculty/Professor at Alba Graduate Business School. Professor Markos is a Permanent Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Professor Markos Zachariadis completed their education in a variety of fields and institutions. Professor Markos earned a PhD in Management and Economics of Digital Innovation in Finance, as well as Information Technology and Strategy, from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) between 2006 and 2011. During their studies, they also spent a year as a Visiting Research (PhD) Student at the Cambridge Judge Business School, focusing on Innovation, Strategy, and Organization research from 2009 to 2010. Prior to their PhD, they obtained an MSc in Management of Information Systems and Digital Innovation from LSE in 2003-2004. In addition to their postgraduate degrees, Professor Zachariadis also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic and Professional Practice in Business Administration and Management from the University of Warwick, which they earned from 2013 to 2016. Lastly, they completed their undergraduate studies and obtained a Ptychion (BSc Hons) in Economic Science from the University of Patras. Professor Markos also holds a High School Diploma from the Experimental School of the University of Patras, where they studied Economics, Maths, and History.
