CTO at Xwing

Maxime Gariel is the Chief Technology Officer at Xwing. Maxime has held this position for the past six years. Prior to joining Xwing, Maxime was with Rockwell Collins - Advanced Technology Center for five years where they served as a Pr. Systems Engineer - Guidance, Navigation and Control, Pr. Navigation and Control Engineer. In these roles, they were responsible for aircraft modeling and flight control law tuning, the design and implementation of Flight Control Laws for Formation Flight of 10ft UAVs, Differential GPS, Aircraft integration and flight tests, Artificial Intelligence / Reinforcement learning, Flight control systems for unmanned vehicles and optionally piloted vehicles, Unmanned systems, Flight critical systems, Reliability, System Safety Assessment, Fault Tree Analysis, FMECA, and Redundancy management for triplex redundant flight control system.

After leaving Rockwell Collins, Maxime took on the role of Post-doctoral associate at MIT's International Center for Air Transportation (ICAT) with Prof John Hansman. The research sponsored by the FAA was titled "Traffic Situational Awareness with Alerts". In this role, they developed a collision alerting algorithm for general aviation. Maxime then moved to the Laboratory for Information and Decision System with Prof Emilio Frazzoli where they continued their research sponsored by NASA titled “Influence of degraded environment on airspace safety”. Maxime's responsibilities in this role included data mining and the creation of airspace health monitoring tools.

Maxime then returned to academia as a PhD Candidate - Research Assistant at the Georgia Institute of Technology where they worked for four years. Maxime then took on a role as a Research Assistant at NASA Ames Research Center for three months before moving to France to take on a role as a Guest researcher at Ecole nationale de l'Aviation civile for four months. After their time in France, they returned to industry as an Internship at Thales Avionics for 11 months before taking on a role as IT support at Securitas France for one month.

Maxime Gariel holds a Ph.D from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Aerospace Engineering (2008-2010), a Master of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering (2006-2008), and a Diplome d'Ingenieur from ISAE-SUPAERO in Aeronautic and Space (2003-2008). Maxime also holds a Remote Pilot Certificate for Small Unmanned Systems from the Federal Aviation Administration and a Private Pilot License from the Federal Aviation Administration.
