The Org has identified 100 companies that are founded or led by people of color in the U.S. and the U.K. and the estimated amount of funding each of the companies have received.
At first glance, there seems to be a significant amount of major tech companies that are led or founded by people of color.
Companies such as Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Twitter and IBM are all headed by CEOs who grew up in India, and female CEOs are becoming more prominent among Fortune 500 companies.
But though there may be upward trends, women and people of color are still notably underrepresented in the tech industry.
Only 35% of leaders at Facebook are women, and less than 5% of them are Black. Although Amazon reported an increase in Black and LatinX employees between 2018 and 2020 the majority of them work in field and customer support. And despite making up 32% of the global workforce, over 70% of Amazon’s senior executives are white.
Similar statistics can be found at Google, where white men and women make up 65.5% of the senior executive team and Black and Native American women have the highest attrition rates.
Funding to startups founded by people of color also significantly falls behind the white peers.
According to a 2020 Crunchbase Diversity Spotlight Report, Black and Latinx founders received significantly less venture capital funding in 2020, representing a mere 2.4% of the total $87.3 billion dollars that went to founders that year.
Black women especially fall behind, having only received 0.27% of the total venture money in the U.S. between 2018 and 2020.
Venture capital firms have since launched special funds that are directed at POC founders – these include Andreessen Horowitz’s Talent x Opportunity fund and Softbank's Opportunity Growth Fund.
There are a great number of benefits that come from having a diverse workforce. Research has proved over and over again that diversity drives innovation and growth, and is directly correlated with profitability and value creation.
In hopes of flaunting the impressive achievements by people of color, The Org has identified 100 companies that are founded or led by people of color in the U.S. and the U.K. and the estimated amount of funding each of the companies have received.
