Ángel-Luis Arias Serrano

General Director at Aena

Ángel-Luis Arias Serrano was born in Madrid in 1960 and received a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the Escuela de Negocios in Madrid.

He was admitted by examination into the Military Corps and the Civil Corps of Aeronautical Engineers of the State.

Since May 2015, he has been the Managing Director of ENAIRE and the Chairman of CRIDA (Reference Center for ATM Research, Development, and Innovation).

Over his career, he has worked in various aeronautical organizations and companies; in 1984, he was a military engineer in the Air Force, before later performing a range of duties at the Civil Aviation General Directorate starting in 1989.

From Aena's creation in 1991 until 2011, he worked at this organization, occupying different technical and management posts, such as Director of Strategic Planning, Assistant Director to the President's Office, Director of Management Control and Planning, and Director of Strategy, Innovation and Sustainability.

From January 2012 until May 2015, he was the General Director of Civil Aviation and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), and Vice-chairman of the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL).

He has been a member of the Board of Directors of ENAIRE, SENASA, INTA, INECO, and AENA.

His career has included membership in various international civil aviation work groups: ICAO, EUROCONTROL, EUROPEAN UNION, European Space Agency, etc. In 1998, the European Commission appointed him Vice-chairman of the Panel of Experts assigned to define the Future European Air Transport System.

Between 1998 and 2012, he lectured in Air Navigation to undergraduate students of Aeronautical Management at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

In May 2016 he has received the “Engineer of 2016” award from the Official Association of Aeronautical Engineers of Spain. In December 2017, the Council of Ministers awarded him the Aeronautical Merit Grand Cross - White Distinction, and in 2019, the Association of Spanish Airlines (ALA) presented him with its annual ALA Award.
