Jessica Walter

Senior Director, Head Of Biology at Amyris

Jessica Walter has worked in various scientific roles since 2000. Jessica began their career as an International Fellow at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2000, where they wrote and delivered lectures, planned, taught and graded labs and discussion sections on basic electrodynamics. Jessica was awarded the Departmental Teaching Award in 2001. In 2001, Jessica also began their graduate student instructor role at UC Berkeley, where they planned, executed and supervised introductory Physics discussion and lab for undergraduate students. Jessica was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award in 2002. From 2002 to 2003, Jessica was a visiting researcher at the Medical Research Council, where they studied the diffusion of CCR5 and CD4 receptors in mammalian cell membranes. From 2003 to 2008, Jessica was a graduate student at UC Berkeley, where they studied the physics of proton pump and molecular motor using microscopy and magnetic tweezers. From 2008 to 2013, Jessica was a postdoc at UCSF, where they engineered new subcellular compartments by constructing simple protein-based spatial circuits. Since 2013, Jessica has been working as a Principal Scientist, Senior Scientist and Scientist at Amyris. In their roles, they have been involved in metabolic and genetic engineering as an individual contributor and project leader, as well as leading a team of 5-7 scientists to meet ambitious performance targets to dramatically reduce the cost of production.

Jessica Walter attended Princeton University from 1996 to 2000, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Physics. Jessica then attended the University of California, Berkeley from 2001 to 2008, where they obtained a M.A and Ph.D. in Physics and Biophysics.
