Derek Hassmann

Chief of Mission Integration & Operations at Axiom Space

Derek Hassmann is the Chief of Mission Integration & Operations at Axiom Space. Mr. Hassmann has over 29 years of human spaceflight experience and made substantial contributions to the assembly, activation, and operation of the International Space Station from the launch of the first ISS element in 1998 to the final Shuttle assembly mission in 2011.

Derek served as a NASA Flight Director for over a decade and was responsible for leading flight control teams in the Mission Control Center (MCC) during ISS operations which included 16 spacewalks, and five Shuttle missions. Following his flight operations career, Mr. Hassmann managed the team of engineers in the NASA Commercial Crew Program responsible for collaborating with Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) in support of their effort to develop a crewed Dragon spacecraft.

Derek was also the Director of Flight Operations at Bigelow Aerospace and contributed to the certification, launch, and on-orbit activation of the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) on the ISS. Mr. Hassmann is the recipient of numerous awards including the NASA Exceptional Service medal, the NASA Outstanding Leadership medal, and the Aviation Week and Space Technology Award. Derek earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
