Bernd Gerhartz

Chief Scientific Officer at Better Dairy

Bernd Gerhartz has extensive experience in the field of protein science and research. Bernd is currently the Chief Scientific Officer at Better Dairy, starting in September 2021. Prior to this, they held various roles at Abcam, including Vice President of Global Research and Innovation from April 2021 to September 2021. In their role as VP of Technology Development from March 2019 to April 2021, they established the Technology Development department and led teams in the UK, US, and China. Bernd also served as the Head of Protein Science from June 2018 to February 2019. Before joining Abcam, Gerhartz worked at Novartis for many years, starting in 2002. At Novartis, they held positions such as Director and Head of Protein Science, where they led a protein science group and provided support for drug discovery projects. Bernd also chaired a protein production network and developed an outsourcing strategy during their time at Novartis. Prior to joining Novartis, Gerhartz worked as the Group Lead for Protein Production at Probiodrug from July 1998 to June 2002.

Bernd Gerhartz began their education journey in 1983, attending Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz where they studied Chemistry and Biology. Bernd completed their studies there in 1987, but did not mention any specific degree earned. In 1987, they went on to pursue a Master's Degree in Biology at The University of Bonn, completing the program in 1990. Following this, they enrolled at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München from 1990 to 1995, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry. After completing their Ph.D., Bernd Gerhartz joined Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München once again from 1995 to 1996 as a post-doctoral scholar. Bernd then moved to Lund University in 1996 and stayed until 1998 as part of a European post-doctoral fellowship program.
