Derek J. Campbell

Derek J. Campbell has a diverse work experience in various companies and roles. Currently, they are the Director of Engineering, Growth at Bitly, where they collaborate with cross-functional teams to build features that drive acquisition, conversion, and retention. Derek J. leads five distributed teams encompassing over 21 engineers and managers.

Prior to Bitly, Derek worked at Freshly as the Director of Engineering, where they collaborated with stakeholders, managed project timelines and resources, and led six distinct teams comprising over 34 engineers and managers. Derek J. also developed and executed strategic initiatives in software engineering and played a key role in hiring and retaining top talent.

Before Freshly, Derek held roles at Republic Services as a Quality Assurance Manager and Quality Assurance Engineer, where they utilized resources and developed frameworks to improve testing efficiency and automation coverage. Derek J. also established a Testing Center of Excellence and implemented standardized test planning processes. Additionally, Derek reduced application testing time and costs by implementing risk-based testing and migrating to open-source tools.

Prior to Republic Services, Derek worked as a Quality Assurance Engineer at Ribyt and as a Systems Engineer at American Express. At Ribyt, they focused on quality assurance, while at American Express, they collaborated with a team to develop and maintain internal web applications.

Derek's earlier work experience includes a brief stint as an Elementary School Teacher at Horizon Community Learning Center. Overall, they have strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a track record of driving positive change and delivering high-quality software projects.

Derek J. Campbell holds a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Teaching from Northern Arizona University, which they completed from 2012 to 2014. Prior to that, they obtained an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies and Humanities from Scottsdale Community College, where they studied from 2009 to 2011. In addition to their degrees, Derek also has certifications as a Certified ScrumMaster from the Scrum Alliance, which they obtained in July 2018, and as an Elementary Education Teacher 1-8 with a Structured English Immersion Endorsement K-12 from the Arizona Department of Education, which they earned in June 2014.
