Senior Principal Scientist/lab Head - External Innovation, Cardiometabolic Diseases Research at Boehringer Ingelheim

Aaron Mercer has extensive experience in the field of research and development, particularly in the areas of cardiometabolic diseases, obesity, and liver disease. Aaron currently holds the position of Senior Principal Scientist/Lab Head - External Innovation, Cardiometabolic Diseases Research at Boehringer Ingelheim, where they manage staff and oversees external innovation in vitro biology. Aaron also serves as a research project leader, coordinating discovery, in vitro, and in vivo programs to support the early research pipeline. Aaron'sresponsibilities also include evaluating novel therapeutic concepts for the treatment of obesity and NASH.

Prior to their current role, Aaron worked at Novo Nordisk, where they held multiple positions. As a Senior Scientist/Project Leader in Obesity Research, they were responsible for coordinating research programs in support of the early research pipeline and facilitating preclinical target validation. Aaron also evaluated therapeutic concepts for the treatment of obesity and obesity-related complications. Before that, they served as a Scientist II in Global Obesity & Liver Disease Research, where they contributed technical expertise in anatomy/histology/histochemistry to support research in obesity and diabetes. Aaron also conducted internal target diligence for new therapies in the obesity pipeline. Aaron began their career at Novo Nordisk as a Research Scientist in Metabolic Disease/Research Technologies, where they provided technical expertise in histology and imaging and collaborated with academic partners for research deliverables.

Earlier in their career, Aaron worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Michigan in the laboratory of Dr. Malcolm Low. Aaron was funded by competitive positions on an NIH training grant and a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. Aaron also served as a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, working in the laboratory of Dr. Wallace Thoreson and being funded by a competitive pre-doctoral fellowship.

Aaron Mercer completed their education in the following institutions and fields:

- From 2011 to 2015, they pursued a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan.

- Between 2006 and 2011, they obtained a Ph.D in Experimental Neuroscience from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

- From 2002 to 2006, they acquired a B.S. degree in Biological Science, Anatomy, and Neuroscience from Colorado State University.
