Jason Kost

Bioinformatics Engineer at Catalytic Data Science

Jason Kost has worked in a variety of roles in the field of bioinformatics and computational genetics since 2003. Jason began their career as a Senior Application Developer and Database Developer at the Caitlin Raymond International Bone Marrow/Cord Blood Registry in 2003. In 2008, they moved on to become a Research Associate at Worcester State University. In 2012, they became a Research Assistant at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where they curated, processed, and analyzed a large number of exome sequenced ALS samples. Jason also developed a sequence processing pipeline based on the Broad Institute’s GATK best practices guidelines. In 2015, they became a Research Consultant at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where they processed and analyzed 2-photon microscope images and developed code to automate the analysis. Jason left the job due to an unexpected family emergency which required relocation. In 2016, they became a Computational Geneticist and Bioinformatician at the University of Vermont. In this role, they constructed and configured a 20 node HPC cluster, performed pedigree and trio causal variant analyses, and conducted haplotype analysis of scoliosis genomic and clinical data. Jason also analyzed immunofluorescence microscopy colocalization data, performed PCA analysis of expression data in hepatic cell types, and developed a method for determining consensus peaks in ChIP data. In 2021, they became a Bioinformatics Engineer at Catalytic Data Science.

Jason Kost began their educational journey in 1997 when they attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and completed course work with a concentration on mathematics and computer science. Jason then attended Worcester State University from 2007 to 2010, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. In 2011, they returned to Worcester Polytechnic Institute to pursue a Master of Science in Biomathematics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology, which they completed in 2015. Jason also holds a high school diploma from Burlington High School.
