Phil Varner

Phil Varner is a senior geospatial software engineer at Element 84. Phil has over four years of experience in software development, with a focus on health care applications. Phil has a strong background in technical architecture, design, and implementation.

Phil began their career as a software developer at Astraea, where they worked on a complex, HIPAA-compliant system for remote healthcare delivery. Phil was responsible for the technical architecture, design, implementation, and management of several individual contributors. During their time at Astraea, Phil designed and implemented Python Zappa library-based serverless services in AWS for integrations with SurveyGizmo and Redox. Phil also implemented the PHI de-identification library in Python (Deidre).

In June 2017, Phil joined Locus Health as a software architect. In this role, they were responsible for the software architecture, design, implementation, and management of a complex, HIPAA-compliant system for remote healthcare delivery. During their time at Locus Health, Phil designed and led the implementation of a RESTful API in Ruby using Grape. Phil also continued to work on serverless services in AWS, and implemented the PHI de-identification library in Python (Deidre).

In September 2018, Phil returned to Astraea as a senior software developer. In this role, they were responsible for the technical architecture, design, implementation, and management of several individual contributors. During their time at Astraea, Phil designed and implemented Python Zappa library-based serverless services in AWS for integrations with SurveyGizmo and Redox. Phil also implemented the PHI de-identification library in Python (Deidre).

Phil joined Element 84 in February 2021 as a senior geospatial software engineer. In this role, they are responsible for the development of geospatial software applications.

Phil Varner's educational career includes earning a Master's in Computer Science from the University of Virginia, as well as a Bachelor's in Computer Science from the University of Virginia.

Phil Varner reports to Lauren Frederick, Director of Engineering. They work with Brian Servia - Software Engineer, Johnathan Rush - Senior Geospatial Software Engineer, and Jonathan Blake - Senior DevOps Engineer.
